Barcelona next manager odds: Xavi Hernandez becomes odds-on favourite, Roberto Martinez and Marcelo Gallardo among frontrunners for Camp Nou job after Ronald Koeman sacked

Oct 28, 2021

Ronald Koeman was sacked this week after a poor run of form from Barcelona and instantly attention has drawn to the potential of their former midfielder and legend Xavi Hernandez to takeover.

There are a few other candidates for the huge La Liga role including Antonio Conte, Roberto Martinez and Marcelo Gallardo.

Xavi spent a long career at Barcelona and was bid farewell in his final game at Camp Nou

Koeman was under immense pressure already but performances haven’t been up to the standard that Barcelona are used to and expecting, and their loss to Rayo Vallecano was the last straw.

The La Liga giants now sit ninth in the table, six points below the league leaders and El Classico rivals Real Madrid.

Almost instantly the Barcelona legend Xavi became the odds-on favourite to take the vacant position.

Xavi left Barcelona in 2015 and went on to Al Sadd in Qatar where he enjoyed four years playing and then went on to manage the side.

His tenure there has clearly had a huge effect as the side are now dominating the Qatar Stars League where they won the 2020/21 season by 13 points.

Xavi’s side have now notched seven wins out of seven games in the league this season and even won the Emir Cup last week.

Having spent nearly two decades at Barcelona his odds-on favouritism sees him clear of any other contender.

Martinez is next in the betting odds according to Betfair, and has managed steadily in the England football leagues since 2007 when he took over at Swansea City.

He went on to Wigan and Everton for long stints too and in 2016 took the lucrative role of managing the Belgium national side.

Due to the star-studded team not winning the expected trophies his time at Belgium has been questioned of late..

The Argentian manager Gallardo is also among the frontrunners but his managerial career has always remained in his home country and has spent seven years at River Plate.

Conte has been linked with numerous jobs in the Premier League with the Newcastle job being one of the most talked about along with the potential of a huge move to Manchester United.
